Lawmaker’s Late-Night OUI Arrest Raises Alarming Questions About State House Transparency

Incident Underscores Urgent Need to Enact Voter-Approved Legislative Audit Law

In response to today’s revelations that State Representative John Lawn was arrested for operating under the influence and leaving the scene of a crash near the State House at 1:45 a.m., the Massachusetts Fiscal Alliance is calling for immediate transparency from Beacon Hill leadership and renewed urgency in enacting the voter-approved legislative audit law.

“The fact that a sitting lawmaker was leaving a State House event at nearly 2:00 a.m. before being arrested for drunk driving and fleeing the scene of an accident raises serious questions about what exactly is going on behind those closed doors. The public deserves to know what kind of event was taking place, who was involved, and what the legislature is doing to hold itself accountable,” said Paul Diego Craney, Executive Director of the Massachusetts Fiscal Alliance

According to police reports, Representative Lawn exhibited clear signs of intoxication, including slurred speech and unsteadiness, and refused both a breathalyzer after fleeing the scene of a crash outside the State House that damaged a parked vehicle.

“This is exactly the kind of behavior that reinforces public distrust in Beacon Hill. It’s also exactly why voters overwhelmingly supported a ballot initiative to allow for independent audits of the legislature conducted by their elected State Auditor. If lawmakers expect to be taken seriously on issues of public safety and ethics, they need to clean up their own house first, starting with implementing the audit law without delay,” said Craney.

MassFiscal urges legislative leaders to be fully transparent about the circumstances surrounding the incident and to move swiftly to honor the will of the voters by implementing the audit law passed in 2024.
