MassFiscal Responds to Transportation Funding Report

The Massachusetts Fiscal Alliance today pushed back on a new transportation funding report from Transportation for Massachusetts and the Massachusetts Budget and Policy Center, warning that calls for new taxes and fees ignore the Commonwealth’s broader economic warning signs. While advocates continue to argue for higher revenues amid record state spending, Massachusetts is experiencing sustained outmigration and lagging job growth as families and employers leave for lower-cost states, raising serious questions about the state’s economic future.

“Beacon Hill activists keep insisting that the answer to every problem is more money, even as residents and businesses continue to leave Massachusetts. The income surtax was sold as a solution, yet we’re still hearing the same demands for new taxes while affordability worsens and economic growth stalls. Before lawmakers consider harmful proposals like congestion pricing or higher fees, they should focus on controlling the state’s out-of-control spending and repealing the policies that are driving people out and making it harder to create jobs here,” said Paul Diego Craney, Executive Director of the Massachusetts Fiscal Alliance.
