Sunshine Week is an annual celebration that takes place across the country, aiming to highlight transparency and accountability in government—values that are too often ignored on Beacon Hill.
While Massachusetts leaders claim to support open government, their actions tell a different story. MassFiscal is honoring Sunshine Week 2025 by highlighting several issues of transparency as part of our latest video series.
📢 Audit the Legislature Now!
State Auditor Diana DiZoglio is calling on lawmakers and Attorney General Andrea Campbell to enforce the Audit the Legislature law—a measure that 82% of Massachusetts voters support. Beacon Hill has resisted oversight for too long. It's time for real transparency.
🎥 A Rare Glimpse Behind Closed Doors
For Sunshine Week, we covered a Joint Rules Conference Committee hearing where select legislators attempted to reconcile the House and Senate versions of rules to conduct their current two-year session by. This was a rare public meeting, but unlike every other listed hearing that week, it wasn’t available to be watched online. Sen. Creem admitted it never even occurred to them to let the public watch. Beacon Hill prefers to operate in the shadows despite some minor virtue signaling. That needs to change.
🔎 Governor Healey’s Broken Transparency Promises
Governor Maura Healey campaigned on transparency, but during the migrant shelter crisis, crime, fraud, and abuse went unchecked. Whistleblower Jon Fetherston exposed the state’s failure to protect vulnerable people. The public deserves answers.
The people of Massachusetts deserve honest, open, and accountable government. Sunshine Week is a reminder that we must keep pushing for transparency—not just this week, but every week.
Thank you for your continued support in holding our leaders accountable.
