Healey and Campbell Missing in Action as Sheriff Tompkins’ Bahamas, Vegas, and Luxury Hotel Charges Pile Up

he Massachusetts Fiscal Alliance today blasted Governor Maura Healey and Attorney General Andrea Campbell for their silence and absence amid the growing scandal surrounding Suffolk County Sheriff Steven Tompkins, who was arrested last week on federal extortion charges and is now under scrutiny for over $133,000 in questionable taxpayer-funded expenses.

According to a Boston Herald report, P-card spending from the Sheriff’s Office in fiscal 2025 included trips to the Bahamas, Las Vegas, and luxury hotels across the country, as well as thousands spent on fine dining, golf, and airfare upgrades, despite explicit state rules prohibiting such purchases.

“Governor Healey won’t even comment and Attorney General Campbell is vacationing on Martha’s Vineyard while taxpayers foot the bill for this alleged corruption. When it comes to public corruption, it’s become a pattern in Massachusetts. Our own leaders consistently dodge responsibility and the feds have to step in,” said Paul D. Craney, Executive Director for the Massachusetts Fiscal Alliance.

The organization called on U.S. Attorney Leah Foley to fully investigate the misuse of funds flagged by the Herald and to require Sheriff Tompkins to reimburse taxpayers for all improper charges.

“This is not complicated. If a public official abuses taxpayer money, that money should be paid back in full. The Suffolk County Sheriff’s office doesn’t exist to bankroll trips to the Bahamas, nights at the Liberty Hotel, or steak dinners at Davio’s. These are luxuries most working families in Suffolk County could never dream of affording, and yet they’re being charged to the public tab pretty consistently by his office,” noted Craney.

“Until Beacon Hill gets serious about accountability, the public will continue to watch as political insiders live large on their dime. Massachusetts deserves leadership that doesn’t hide from corruption when it's politically inconvenient,” Craney concluded.
