With reports of migrants once again spending the night at Logan Airport, the Massachusetts Fiscal Alliance issued the following statement calling on Governor Maura Healey to make necessary changes to stop Massachusetts from continuing to be a global magnet for illegal and inadmissible migrants.
“Despite some small efforts to curtail abuse of the emergency shelter system, the flow of illegal and inadmissible migrants is still coming and our emergency shelter system continues to be overwhelmed. This will continue to happen as long as our state encourages it with near unlimited benefits and other policies which make it worth the journey. The Right to Shelter law was designed to ensure the indigent and homeless of the Commonwealth had access to housing, not to act as a clearing house for people flooding across our open southern border,” noted Paul Diego Craney, a spokesman for the Massachusetts Fiscal Alliance.
“This situation at Logan Airport popping up for a third time after the Healey administration ostensibly “fixed” the problem is proof positive that their half measure approaches are not working and will not work. Without any meaningful reforms that address the root policies making our state a top destination for newly arrived migrants who end up on our benefit roles, we are simply spending good money after bad. We’re going to be right back in the same situation for a fourth time in a few months,” noted Craney.
“This situation isn’t fair to the travelers who depend on Logan Airport and it's not fair to the people who are being housed in these substandard conditions. It’s time for Governor Healey to announce to the world that Massachusetts is full and put a residency requirement on the state benefits that are drawing so many people from across the globe to the Commonwealth,” closed Craney.
