Statement on Maine’s Growing Opposition to TCI

List of New England States Include NH, CT, RI, VT, and now ME

Massachusetts Fiscal Alliance made the following statement regarding news reports that Maine is the latest New England state to voice opposition to the Transportation and Climate Initiative (TCI). New Hampshire flatly rejected TCI in early December. Since then, state leaders in Connecticut, Vermont, Rhode Island and now Maine have voiced similar concerns with the multi-state carbon gas tax scheme.

“If Vermont, Connecticut, Rhode Island, and now Maine follow New Hampshire and withdraw from TCI, and Massachusetts stays in, is it still TCI or just a Massachusetts state gas tax?” Massachusetts Fiscal Alliance Spokesman Paul Craney questioned.

“The appetite for a regressive multi-state carbon gas tax seems to be very limited in New England,” concluded Craney.
