Statement on DeLeo and Jones Letter to Congress

State House Leaders Quick to Lecture Other While Failing their Constituents

Massachusetts Fiscal Alliance made the following statement today in response to Democratic Speaker Bob DeLeo and Republican Minority Leader Brad Jones sending a letter to Congressional leaders demanding they take “immediate steps to support the operations of the US Postal Service.” Their letter goes on to suggest that the US Postal Service may not have the funds needed to ensure mail in ballots are delivered in time for the election. That suggestion is not founded in reality.

“It’s ironic that State House leaders are demanding Congress ensure there is funding for the postal service even though these same Massachusetts leaders still have not passed an annual budget,” stated Paul D. Craney, spokesman for the Massachusetts Fiscal Alliance.

“Career politicians such as Speaker DeLeo and Minority Leader Jones are failing their constituents by not passing an on-time state budget that reduces spending in line with projected revenue shortfalls and does not raise taxes in the midst of an economic crisis

“Their Post Office letter is another distraction to get the public’s attention away from the fact that they have not acted on the most fundamental job they have, which is to produce a fiscally responsible budget that is on time and transparent,” concluded Craney.
